Exploring the status of EO/GI in Algeria

On Thursday 11 March 2021 Mejdi Kaddour (University of Oran 1) gave a presentation on the status of EO/GI in Algeria during the monthly SEEDNA stakeholder engagement meetings. University of Oran 1 is leading the work on National Stakeholder Coordination, one of the tasks related to the overall management of the project.  Aim of this task is to keep track of relevant developments on EO and GI in the different partner countries, but also to monitor the activities on engaging and collaborating with relevant stakeholders in the four partner countries. Therefore, regular country reports will be prepared by the North African partners, in which they describe both the status of EO/GI implementation and their own stakeholder engagement efforts.

In the context of this task, the team of University of Oran 1 made a first assessment of the status of EO/GI in Algeria. Elements covered in this assessment include the key institutions, governance, standardization, geospatial education and training and geospatial research and development. The presentation also included a series of recommendations on the future development of GI and remote sensing in Algeria. Overall, the presentation provided a good overview of the status of EO and GI in Algeria, including an identification of key stakeholders and relevant initiatives.
